Lake Towada
Straddling Aomori and Akita, Lake Towada is a caldera lake formed by volcanic activity that began about 200,000 years ago, and it is the third-deepest lake in Japan.
With a mirror-like surface that reflects the sky and surrounding mountains, and a vast, open panorama that makes you want to take a deep breath, you’ll be wrapped in an indescribable sense of awe—no matter how many times you visit.
Oirase Gorge
Oirase Gorge is a stream that runs for about 14 km from Nenokuchi at Lake Towada to Yakeyama.
Designated and protected by the national government as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument, it offers many highlights such as waterfalls, clear streams, and rock formations.
From spring to summer you can enjoy fresh greenery, and in autumn, stunning foliage—an experience that lets you feel the sacred power of nature.
Boat Tours
There are also boat tours that take you to mysterious spots and “power spots” around Lake Towada.
Some areas are off-limits from the shore, so if you want to fully experience Lake Towada, a boat tour is a must.
You might even catch a glimpse of the “Legendary Christ Statue”...

If you plan to visit Oirase Gorge, Utarube Campground is the closest and highly recommended.
Sightseeing Cruise
On Lake Towada, you can take a sightseeing cruise and enjoy the scenery from the water.
As you glide slowly over the deep-blue surface, you’ll discover beautiful views—surrounding mountains and unique viewpoints—that can only be seen from the lake.
Swan Boats
Rent an easy-to-enjoy swan boat and head out onto the lake.
Choose either rowing or pedal-powered boats to cruise around the lakeshore area.
In addition to swan boats, there are also regular rowboats and even dinosaur boats.
Sauna
Saunas have become a big trend in recent years, and some people even bring tent saunas and use Lake Towada as a natural cold plunge.
However, it’s important to follow local rules and regulations.
There are also sauna facilities that use Lake Towada as a cold plunge, so why not try one of those first?
